Located in Highland Village, Texas, Life's a Beach Grill & Sports Bar is a 9,000-square foot, Caribbean-themed restaurant with many expansive entertainment areas, including an outdoor deck, cabana bar, party patio and sand volleyball courts.

“Our vision for Life's a Beach was to create a fun, casual environment that provides our clientele with both a great sports bar and family dining experience. We really wanted to create a place that would encourage people to unwind from the daily stresses of life, and I think we achieved that.”

As Jim Verfurth, the restaurant’s director of operations, explains, “Our vision for Life's a Beach was to create a fun, casual environment that provides our clientele with both a great sports bar and family dining experience. We really wanted to create a place that would encourage people to unwind from the daily stresses of life, and I think we achieved that.

To create the atmosphere they wanted, the owners of Life's a Beach knew that technology would play an important role. They wanted flat-screen displays and a high-quality, multi-zone audio system that would distribute music throughout the facility. They also wanted to automate the restaurant’s temperature, smoke filtration system and lighting. To achieve this high-level of sophistication, Life's a Beach turned to AMX integration firm Technology Solutions and Services (TSS) of Plano, Texas, who presented them with an integrated solution that not only met, but surpassed their needs.

“Having been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years, I know how difficult it is, and stressful it can be, to keep up with lighting, temperature and sound on a daily basis – in addition to everything else a manager or staff member is responsible for,” added Verfurth. "Given the large size of our restaurant and the amount of technology we wanted to integrate into it, we knew we needed a fast and easy way to manage and control everything. With the help of TSS, we quickly realised that our answer was AMX."

Entertainment

The AMX Control System installed at Life's a Beach features an AMX NI-3000 NetLinx® Integrated Controller, six ViewStat Thermostats, one 8.4” Modero® ViewPoint® Touch Panel, one 7” Modero Touch Panel and one MAX Media Server.

When a patron enters the front door of Life’s a Beach, they are immediately greeted by music, which helps management set the mood and atmosphere of the restaurant. Most of this music is stored on its MAX Media Server, which enables management to select custom playlists that meet a variety of customer listening requirements – from casual dining to theme nights.

As a customer moves through the restaurant, they will see more than 21 flat-screen displays, all of which can be individually adjusted using either AMX Touch Panel. This makes it easy for restaurant staff to respond to customer requests for specific programming or audio levels – no more searching for, and fumbling with, multiple remotes.

Automation

The AMX Control System at Life’s a Beach controls and automates nearly every piece of technology installed in the restaurant. For example, its 45 zones of interior and exterior lighting and multi-zone climate control system are both optimized to conserve energy. Verfurth believes that over time, the energy savings realised by the AMX Control System will more than pay for the system.

“We worked closely with restaurant management to identify levels that would provide a comfortable customer experience while eliminating the wasted energy associated with lights being left on overnight or thermostats not being adjusted at the end of the evening,” said Simon Elias, president and general manager, TSS. “Taking this a step further, we programmed the AMX Control System to provide restaurant managers with automated notifications if the temperature of a refrigerator or freezer deviates from an accepted range. This provides management with peace of mind knowing that their valuable food investment is protected.”

“The chief responsibility for a restaurant manager should be ensuring our guests are satisfied from a food and beverage standpoint – not managing mechanical systems and audio/video equipment. The automation provided by the AMX Control System allows our managers to focus on what’s really important – making sure our guests are happy. Having built this restaurant from the ground up, I have a thorough understanding of our systems and how much is going on at any given time. This gives me a great appreciation for how much the AMX Control System simplifies our day-to-day managerial duties. I honestly can’t imagine operating this restaurant without AMX.”
