Harold Sullivan’s 12,500 square foot private residence in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan can be considered a testament to the abilities of modern audio/video (A/V) and control technology. The home’s vast grounds include a pool house, cabana and outdoor bar, as well as the stunning main house and two attached garages. In order to seamlessly integrate and control the home’s A/V systems, lighting, automatic window shades, CCTV security system, HVAC and automatic front gate, Sullivan turned to AMX systems integrator Spire Integrated Systems of Troy, Michigan.

“This house has over 500 recessed lights, not including lighting fixtures. You can be in bed and remember that you forgot to shut off the lights. With AMX, this is not a problem – one touch shuts down the entire house.”

“I would consider myself to be a technology beginner, but the AMX control system is easy to use and very user friendly,” said Sullivan, whose home includes 18 zones of audio, 12 zones of high-definition (HD) video, 160 zones of Lutron lighting, 12 zones of HVAC, as well as a THX Ultra2 home theatre – all controlled by AMX. “I knew I wanted control of the A/V in any room of my choice at the touch of a button.”

Many of the A/V and control elements effortlessly come together in the home theatre, located on the first floor. The theatre’s acoustical isolation from the rest of the house is achieved using false walls. While most home theatres can be found on the basement level, Sullivan noted that, due to its convenient location, "I use my theatre every evening. That is where I recline back and watch TV. It’s very comfortable and accessible.”

When Sullivan is ready to use the theatre, he simply presses a “warm-up” button on the Lutron keypad located outside the door. The AMX system senses the activity and orchestrates a series of automated functions in the room, such as playing background music and closing window shades. If Sullivan or his family is watching TV and a visitor arrives at the front gate, the AMX 7” Modero Touch Panel, which is custom-installed in the armrest of the front row seats, lets them know. “The Modero Touch Panel is programmed to not interrupt the movie but to instead show who is at the gate,” explained Navot Shoresh, principal owner of Spire, who sent the seating company a template of the AMX Touch Panel to ensure proper sizing for the cutout.

Sullivan, a rabid sports fan, can also enjoy watching up to five TV feeds in his sports room downstairs. The room features a custom-built HD video wall that includes one 70” Sony XBR RPTV, surrounded by four smaller 32” Samsung LCD monitors. Using the AMX 8.4” Modero ViewPoint Touch Panel (MVP-8400), Sullivan can configure his video wall in any manner he wishes. “Audio always follows the main TV unless he picks a feed from the CCTV security system, in which there is no audio,” said Shoresh.

The MVP-8400 Touch Panel’s welcome screen was programmed with specialty graphics to represent Sullivan’s favourite sports teams, including the NBA’s Detroit Pistons. When not in use, the wireless touch panel resides in its wall docking station located behind the bar. “Using the AMX control system, a homeowner has the ability to control the entire house from one touch panel,” said Shoresh. “AMX is truly a programmer’s platform.”

Sullivan noted that the control system has afforded him convenience, as well as cost-savings via an additional AMX MVP-8400 located in the master bedroom. “I really like the ‘goodnight button’. This house has over 500 recessed lights; not including lighting fixtures. You can be in bed and remember that you forgot to shut off the lights. With AMX, this is not a problem – one touch shuts down the entire house.”

Currently, Sullivan is working on the finishing touches to his new home, including a garage for his vintage car collection where the AMX control system will handle the audio, lighting and HVAC. Outdoors, Sullivan will use AMX for cabana lighting and the automated rollup door on the outdoor bar. “I am pleased with the system and would recommend it to anyone,” he concluded.
