Hugo's Manly is an architecturally designed open plan restaurant situated on the water at Manly Wharf with 270° habourside views. Hoteliers, Dave Evans, David Corsi and top Australian TV Chef, Peter Evans have a reputation for creating unique dining experiences, and Hugo’s is no exception. With a first class menu and stylish yet relaxed atmosphere Hugo's is fast becoming the hottest dining location in Sydney.

Co-owner David Evans comments, "I'm not great on a computer and I'm certainly not a tech-head but this control system is so simple to operate. It controls our heaters, blinds, audio, lighting, alarm system, kitchen exhaust, air conditioning and at the end of the night I press one button and it turns everything off, drops the blinds and sets the alarm. It's an amazing concept and Dave and his team have done a great job in programming the AMX system."

Hugo's unique water-front location added to the ambience they were hoping to create, however also presented a challenge due to the strong coastal breezes and cool air. Corsi and Evans investigated various heating options, all of which demanded a large amount of power.

With a limited amount power available on Manly Wharf the owners were unsure how they were going to power the heaters and create the environment they had planned.

Design Challenges and AMX Solutions

After working with DJW Projects on the technical design of many successful venues, Corsi and Evans met with Managing Director, Dave Coxon to discuss their heating dilemma. Although the problem expressed by Corsi and Evans was the lack of power available to run the heaters specifically, it was obvious to Coxon that the power shortage would affect not only the heaters but the entire technical functionality of the restaurant.

Coxon has vast experience in the sound, vision, lighting and automation of entertainment spaces, however managing power consumption was not an area that they had come across before. After consultation with other industry contacts it was evident that power management solutions within the hotel sector had not been broached before.

Coxon and team workshopped ideas and developed what would be an industry-first, power current and management system which manages the heating and lighting systems at Hugo's, all integrated and controlled by AMX.

This system includes some of the most intelligent technology available to the industry today. The lighting and blinds are controlled by Clipsal C-BUS and the heaters controlled by LSC EKO Dimmers. AMX was chosen to bring all of these systems together. The AMX NetLinx controller interfaces into the C-BUS, LSC EKO dimmers and the multi-room audio system. By interfacing into these individual systems, the NetLinx controller can take full control of every aspect of the hotel from blinds to heaters to music selection.

However, the smarts of the system begin with extremely smart AMX programming from DJWP. DJW Projects developed a triple redundant monitoring system that looks at the actual current draw and the predicted current requirement making real-time adjustments to the heating and lighting systems to allow for additional requirements over and above the available supply.

DJW Projects provides exceptional support to Hugo's including having daily reports of system usage and operation generated and sent to them for analysis. Any critical problem is immediately brought to DJW Projects and Hugo's management's attention. DJW Projects also have full control to monitor or adjust any aspect of the restaurant from any location.

After six months of designing, programming and installing David and his team at DJW Project's delivered a complete intuitive power management and automation system.

The Manly Hugo's restaurant is a world class first for Australia when it comes to AMX power management solutions.
