Leading the Industry in Secure AV Design – AMX by HARMAN Security Initiatives

AMX by HARMAN is dedicated to providing world class engineering, top notch design, and delivering reliable, secure solutions. Historically the biggest challenge to securing AV equipment has been the lack of standardized security profiles and policies for AV equipment. In order to create a target for security development, AMX took a risk management framework approach and analyzed security controls under frameworks such as ISO 27001 standards and the US National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) SP800-53 to create an appropriate set of security controls for AV applications on the Network.

Once a control set was established, AMX surveyed security policies around the world, including (from the US) the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Publication 200, Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) Instruction No. 1253 (CNSSI 1253), and Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 8510.01. AMX then applied the strictest control values for each control as the security target.

The result is the most secure AV product family on the market. Featuring the same enhanced cybersecurity features found in leading IT technologies, HARMAN AV solutions enable IT departments to significantly reduce AV operation and maintenance costs, while also improving system availability through secure remote management systems.

AMX by HARMAN AV solutions products security highlights:

  • Role Based Access Control (RBAC)
    • Integration with Microsoft Active Directory
    • Two-factor authentication
      • Common Access Card (CAC) and Personnel Identification Verification (PIV) Card reader enabled
    • Programmable access control with Two-factor authentication available at the touch panel UI
  • Security logs in SYSLOG
  • FIPS 140-2 compliant encryption
  • TLS based control protocol (ICSPS)
  • SSH and TLS control of third party devices
  • Certificate based Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
    • Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) and Certificate Revocation List (CRL) support
  • Port based security (802.1x)

About our JITC Testing & List of Products on DoDIN APL

AMX by HARMAN Products Listed on the DoDIN APL Approved Products List

AMX has worked with the US Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC), expanded our testing, and as a result over 50 models have been added to the Approved Products List (DoDIN APL). Additionally, we are now the only AV manufacturer to receive the Cybersecurity Assessment Package (CAP) for direct connection to DoD networks.

From the DISA website:

“The APL is the only listing of equipment by DoD to be fielded in DoD networks. DoD components are required to fulfill their system needs by only purchasing APL listed products, providing one of the listed products meets their needs.”1

Australia ICT Security Branch and Head ICT Operations Grant AMX Formal Certification

AMX has received formal certification and accreditation from ICT Security Branch and Head ICT Operations (HICTO), Chief Information Officer Group (CIOG) of Australia’s Department of Defence for a HARMAN AMX Defence Audio Visual Environment System.

The accreditation allowlists AMX’s current NX series of NetLinx® integrated AV control systems and Enova® Digital Media and AV Presentation Switchers for direct connection to the Defence Restricted Network (DRN) in Defence Audio Visual Environments. This new capability provides a platform for network-based configuration and enterprise-grade monitoring and management of AMX-based audio-visual environments in Defence facilities globally, via the previously certified AMX Resource Management Suite (RMS).
